You probably go to the big job boards like Indeed, Glassdoor, or ZipRecruiter and apply and get no results. Maybe you’re overdoing it by saying, “I’ll just wait and pray and apply for everything, even the ones I’m overqualified for.” And you’re still not getting any results, are you?

That’s because everyone else is doing the same thing.

Let’s add a little complexity to it. Everyone talks about low unemployment and how there are two jobs for every person, but that’s not really true. People don’t want most of those jobs. That is why they left them. Those really good jobs, the jobs you want, everybody goes after them, especially when they’re on job boards. So the competition is very high.

Studies show that only approx 2% of people who apply online ever hear back from the employer. It’s not even a ghost. You don’t even get to the table for ghosts. And it’s a really inefficient and overwhelming way to look for a job. It makes you feel like a failure. You are not unlucky. No one taught you new job search rules. So here’s what you’re going to do about it…

Change your mindset from a job seeker to a job buyer. The job seeker chooses where they want to work next. Now, to become a job buyer, you are going to become intentional. Search 20 or 30 companies in your area that you would like to work for that hire for your skill set.

When I say you’d like to work for them, it’s not because you’ve heard they pay well or have great benefits. It’s because you respect and admire what they do for work.

This is not something we have ever been taught to do before, and it may seem really strange to you. But think about it. There are reasons you’re drawn to certain brands, right? We all have a brand we’re in love with. It’s called brand bonding. And with that comes a history of association, meaning that at some point you fell in love with that brand through experience.

Well, guess what? Employers are brands, and when you can share the story of your connection with them, tell them why you admire and respect them, and how you knew they were a great place to work, you’ll stand out.

Once you have your contact history and interview list of employers, you can apply some smart job search strategies to get their attention and get around the ATS to get results.
